Internal OpenAI documents viewed by The New York Times have indicated that OpenAI has said it will jack up the individual ChatGPT subscription to $22 per month by the year-end from the current $20. For the ChatGPT Plus subscriptions, the company plans for a much more significant increase; the average monthly subscription fee will be $44 per month in 2029.
Such price or cost changes result from demands from investors impatient with losses. While OpenAI was generating $300 million of monthly revenue as of August, it is expected to lose about $5 billion in the current year. These are due to office rent, staffing, and AI training infrastructure. For a while, ChatGPT was said to be costing OpenAI $700,000 per day.
However, one can stumble on the rate barrier when charges start rising. OpenAI’s subscription model currently has about 10 million paid users, and research has shown that many consider the $20 monthly fee unreasonably expensive.
