RepScan wants to democratize the right to remove content from the internet

The reputation on the internet It can be key to getting a loan, a visa or attracting clients. Also, more and more human resources managers in companies are searching the net for job candidates. Hence, it is increasingly important for anyone to have the possibility of remove unwanted content that there is on the net about them (photographs, data, videos and false content). This is stated by Josep Coll, co-founder and CEO of RepScan, a startup which is launched now to democratize the right to remove content from the network. “We want to be the Robin Hood of digital reputation,” he adds.

According to Coll, until now those who wanted to remove content from the network had basically to go to specialized lawyers and initiate processes that were not only long, but also expensive. Against this, RepScan offers a proprietary technological platform that allows detecting, documenting and eliminating content “quickly, legally and economically”.

“For example, detecting and deleting a photo or video costs 95 euros and takes us 24 hours on average, and if it is information 257 euros and 72 hours. In case of hiring a lawyer, the price per photo or video is about 600 euros minimum ”, continues the manager, who warns that the cost only exists if the content is eliminated, otherwise the company does not charge the client anything .

RepScan works on a software-as-a-service model. Through its platform, people can hire different services. For example, one of alerts called RepScan Alert, which will notify you of the appearance of new negative content and you can point out from your mobile the content you want to remove from the internet, seeing the evolution in real time. In this case, its price ranges from 200 to 600 euros per month, depending on whether the client wants them to do a daily or weekly search, for example.

The company also offers an emergency service “for the most pressing cases”, which covers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, since, according to Coll, “the first moments are key to stopping the distribution of negative content on the network.”

The CEO of RepScan assures that 25% more content is published on the internet each year than the previous year and the problem is that much of what is published violates rights such as image, honor, social reintegration or the right forgotten. “And citizens do not know how to exercise these rights to control their digital life,” he concludes.

Coll points out that on the internet it is common for someone to upload someone else’s photo during a party, bullying videos or intimate photos of ex-partners. There are also cases of professionals accused in a judicial process who, despite having been acquitted or convicted (but having served their sentence), comments about them on the internet cause them to be denied loans or cannot find work.

“This is taking its toll on many people, who feel that their lives are being ruined, and we cannot allow it to take weeks, months or years to remove negative content from the web. For this reason, RepScan, which is connected to all social platforms, was born with the aim of erasing them in a few hours ”, insists Coll, who affirms that“ we are in the prehistory of all this.

The legaltech claims the rights indicated and the drop of these contents to the social platforms with which it is connected (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube …) and also to the media. But where is the people’s right to information? “The right to information exists and has a time, because the right to be forgotten is also recognized by European legislation,” says Coll, who argues that “it makes no sense that if a person, for example, has been acquitted in a trial 15 years ago the news or photo on the subject continued to appear in the first Google results. In addition, we do not always ask as a solution to delete the news. You can also change the name of the person affected by initials or de-index the news from the search engines after a while even if it remains in the newspaper library of the medium ”.

RepScan is based in Barcelona and starts with a team of seven people, three from Red Points, a recognized startup also founded by Josep Coll and whose technology enables the fight against counterfeiting and piracy on the internet. Like this one, the new project, which uses artificial intelligence and search engine technology to automate the entire process, aims to be a global company that “empowers people anywhere in the world”, and for this it plans to open in March or April this year a round of financing of about 400,000 euros.

According to Coll, RepScan is going to be the first platform that it will draw up notarial acts of content on the internet. “And we will report documentation in case the client wants to take legal action.” It also clarifies that they will not work for political parties and that in the cases in which they cannot delete the content, they will help their clients to position neutral content (in case the information circulating on the internet is false) or we will claim the right to rectification if the content is incorrect. “We will always seek solutions within the law,” says the manager, who sees Reputation.com as a competitor to follow. “It is possible that within 4 or 5 years you will see our advertisements on television as they already do in the US.”

RepsCan has been founded, in addition to Coll, who is a lawyer specialized in intellectual property and professor at the University of Girona, by the telecommunications engineer Alejandro Castellano and Coque Moreno, who has more than 10 years of experience in asset protection in the digital realm.
