Google down: Gmail, Meet, YouTube and Nest suffer major authentication system outage


A major outage took down multiple Google websites and services including Gmail, Youtube and Nest on Monday December 14, 2020.

Google services and websites like Gmail, Meet, Drive, Docs, YouTube, Nest, and Google.com suffered a major outage on Monday, December 14, 2020. The problems appear to have started around 6:30 AM ET and lasted until nearly 8:00 AM ET.

Google issues the following statement about the outage to TechRepublic:

“Today, at 3.47AM PT Google experienced an authentication system outage for approximately 45 minutes due to an internal storage quota issue. Services requiring users to log in experienced high error rates during this period. The authentication system issue was resolved at 4:32AM PT. All services are now restored. We apologise to everyone affected, and we will conduct a thorough follow up review to ensure this problem cannot recur in the future.”

Downdetector and the Google Workspace dashboard showed just how widespread the outage was.

Update 10:55 AM ET: Added Google’s statement.

Update 7:53 AM ET: Services appear to be coming back up as users have reported being able to access YouTube and other Google services.
