According to information from The Verge, Facebook wants to launch a smartwatch in 2022 that can also record videos and photos and share them directly on Facebook and Instagram.

Accordingly, Facebook will then present a multifunctional smartwatch that is likely to compete with the products of Apple and Google. The watch should contain two cameras to cover a wide variety of functions.

In order for Facebook to be able to assert itself against the competition – especially the Apple Watch – with a smartwatch, the device would have to provide users with exciting functions. While it’s not yet clear what the Watch Facebooks should look like, Alex Heath at The Verge explains what it is likely to be able to do. So the device has two cameras. One on the front is intended as a display and, for example, for video calls or live streams. A second camera, which can be removed from the steel bracket of the watch, should invite you to take photos and record videos. The images and clips recorded with it can be accessed directly via Facebook or Instagram – possibly also WhatsApp and Messenger – share.

Company-related sources have also informed the publisher that Facebook is discussing with third-party companies about integrating the camera hub inherent in the smartwatch into backpacks or the like, provided that suitable mounting modules are developed.

Follow-up versions of the first smartwatch are already being planned

According to Alex Heath, Facebook plans to bring out a second and third generation in the years that follow the launch of the first version of the smartwatch. In the future, the smartwatch, if it comes on the market, could also serve as a complementary product to the AR glasses planned by Facebook. An adapted variant of the open source option would presumably be used as the operating system for the watch Android serve on all google Apps based.
